FORT MYERS, FLA. – There has been a continuous increase in litigation cases against insurance companies and in Assignment of Benefits scams across the Sunshine state. For some, this means unaffordable premiums or removing important coverages. For others, it means attaining coverage from Citizens, the state-run insurance company. In 2020 alone, Citizens, the state’s insurer of last resort, added more than 100,000 policies to its book, resulting in one of the first double digits increases in 10 years for the company. 

On April 7, the Florida Senate passed a bill (SB 76) that will remediate some of the problems in the Florida Homeowners market. We at KIG are aware that no piece of legislation is perfect, but we acknowledge the efforts of the Florida Senate for passing a bill that boldly addresses all of the underlying causes of Florida’s insurance crisis. This is a step towards reform. We can not stop here, and the next step is stopping lawyers from profiting off Florida homeowners through frivolous lawsuits and fees. 

As of right now, the Homeowners insurance market will continue to decimate, premium costs will continue to rise and insurers will be pushed into insolvency, leaving us back to the horrors of the mid-2000s Florida property market.
